Simplify and making it easy was my main objective for our house.
I put these in place early on and even though Mama often walked around in the dark, I anticipated that one day maybe, she would forget how to turn on/off the lights.
Motion lighting can be a game-changer for elder care at home. As someone who's seen its benefits firsthand, I can confidently say these little gems are great! Install early. to ensure routine.
The automatic lighting can prevent falls, reduce the risk of bumping into furniture at night, and make navigating the home easier for your loved one. A bonus for me, when I was monitoring from the cameras, I could do monitor my mother’s movements when she went from on room to the bathroom (no cameras in there). The lights would "light"the way.
Sometimes, the lights stayed on, especially the ones I had on the ceiling and Mama would search for a way to turn them off. I did find myself doing that but that’s a small inconvenience compared to the benefits.
Motion lights for us were most helpful:
By and around the bed – For nighttime trips to the bathroom.
In wardrobes and closets – For easy access to clothing and/or shoes.
Under kitchen cabinets – By the sink and near the kettle to brighten that area.
Near doors – For safe entry and exit.
Under the kitchen sink in cupboards – To locate cleaning supplies or trash bags.
On ceilings in common areas.
Along pathways to the bathroom – To light the way.
In the bathroom – Including near the toilet and toilet paper holder for better visibility.
In hallways – To ensure safe movement between rooms, especially at night.
Best thing to do is to take a walk around your home and assess dark areas and high-traffic locations where your loved one has their routine. And then focus on places your loved one frequents or struggles with most.
I purchased both with batteries and those that needed charged. Whichever is your preference.
Consider solar-powered outdoor motion lights near steps or entryways for nighttime safety.
Explore smart bulbs. These can be controlled through an app to turn on and off or dim and change colours.
With a bit of planning, motion lighting can bring comfort, safety, and peace of mind to both you and your loved one.
