What is the purpose of this site and why did you start it?
As I explain in the About Me section, I created this site to help others avoid many of the struggles I went through. When I first started caring for my mum from another country, I couldn't find any help—either in the UK or the USA—that addressed the unique challenges of long-distance caregiving.
Everything I share here comes from my own experience. My hope is that by sharing what worked, what didn't, and what I learned along the way, I can make someone else's journey just a little easier.
Have you been paid to review the products you link to?
No. I have never accepted payment to review a product.
Some pages may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission if you choose to purchase through those links, at no additional cost to you.
I only recommend products that I have personally used, researched, or genuinely believe may be helpful to caregivers.
And if you happen to find a better deal somewhere else, let me know! I'm always happy to help people save money.
How does Caregiving From Afar support itself?
Caregiving From Afar is a small independent website.
Like most small websites, there are ongoing costs involved in creating and maintaining it. My goal is to keep as much free information available as possible whilst supporting the website through guide sales, consultations and, where appropriate, affiliate links.
Every purchase helps me continue creating new resources for caregivers.
Why did you decide to write your guide and consult with people about caring for a person with dementia?
I started this journey from personal experience. Trying to navigate the challenges of caregiving alone has been a painful and isolating process. People are not open to it for some reason. So I started helping others.
Creating effective care plans takes time.
After many, many years of helping others and spending countless hours creating care plans and researching solutions, I realised I could turn that experience into one-to-one support for families facing similar challenges.
There are a lot of products on your blog—did you buy all of them?
Yes, I did, over the course of many years! I often joke that the inside of mama's house ended up being more expensive than the house itself!
What’s your review process?
My reviews are based primarily on hands-on experience and trial and error.
Whilst I've personally used many of the products I recommend, I'm always transparent about the ones I haven't. In those cases, I rely on thorough research, trusted sources and feedback from other caregivers.
If I haven't used something myself, I'll tell you.
Why are there no pictures - of you or your Mama?
Simply put - I've a very private person. So is Mama. She would not like to be "showcased" (even though she looks better than me!) and since she can't consent to the pictures, then I need to respect that. She's a cute little spitfire though. Wee but oh so mighty :)
Do I need to buy your Caregiving Guide?
No. There is plenty of free information on this website, and I hope it genuinely helps.
The handbook simply brings together everything I've learned in one place, in a structured way, with far more detail, practical examples and planning tools.
